Pitta

Pitta (fire and water: heat, focus, sharpness) is the focused quality in Ayurveda (the traditional Indian science of life): drive, a clear aim, and an appetite that shows up on time. The same heat overdoes it when meals run late and the day never cools down.

The picture

This is the Steady Flame. You finish what you start, and you notice what is off about it. Cool, dry air suits you better than a hot room or a humid afternoon.

The day that fits puts the hardest work before lunch, people and meetings after you have eaten, and an evening with nothing left to win. The fire is useful. It wants a lid, in the form of a meal and a cooler night, not a fight with yourself.

Vata (air and space: movement, change, lightness) adds speed. Kapha (earth and water: steadiness, structure, calm) adds stamina. Pitta can sit with either.

Food and timing

Eat when you are hungry, and do not push lunch to the far side of the afternoon. A plate that is not fiercely spiced, with something fresh and cooling beside it, matches the heat better than skipping the meal to finish the task.

When this runs high

Hunger gets sharp, and a late meal makes the mood sharp with it. Skin feels warm. Sleep starts late because the day is still arguing. One more push past lunch is the usual way the evening goes sideways.

One thing to try

Stop for the meal before the hunger turns sharp, and let the evening cool down: a walk, shade, or a night with no score to settle. That is the whole practice.

Common questions

What is a Pitta dosha?

Pitta is the quality of heat and focus: fire and water. It often looks like a strong appetite, a precise mind, and a day that needs a real stop in the evening.

What does a Pitta day feel like?

Morning focus comes readily. If lunch slides, hunger and temper rise together. A meal on time and a cooler evening put the lid back on.

What kind of meals suit Pitta?

Regular meals, before you are overly hungry. Fresh, less fiery food sits better than skipping lunch or eating very late. Timing matters as much as the plate.

How is Pitta different from Vata and Kapha?

Pitta heats and focuses. Vata moves and changes. Kapha steadies and can feel slow to start. A mix of Pitta with either of the others is common.
